Now that is interesting, I have to admit I thought the service cap was removed from general service and replaced by the garrison(overseas) cap back in '41. Obviously the men still wore the service cap but I thought it was against regulation but the authorities turned a blind eye to the practice. But reading this order it would suggest that the service cap was still an authorised item right up until February 1945.
I wonder if they all adhered to this order, the service hat was well liked by the men over here in Britain, can you imagine the guys who had just paid for one from one of the London tailors only to be told he could no longer wear it and had to wear the ungainly garrison cap instead.

I have these photos showing 401BG enlisted men wearing both types of headgear when being awarded medals as late as December 1944:

The Combat Crew backings to their wings show up well too.
(I noticed the relevant 1st Air Division regulation for those in the bumf the other day, will post it when I find it again.)

All the best,
PB

Nice photo's Paul, it also shows the mix of summer and winter weight shirts worn at the same time, and look where the guy with the service hat (in the first picture) has placed his medal ribbons, on the pocket flap. I've never noticed that before. Was this a common practice?
