A bit of good news, it looks like a full set of early ammo cans are on their way with my late ammo cans going the other way.theres also the possibilty of my late MG mount doing the same ,so maybe the old turret will look a little more complete. :?:
Also just found the remains of a Martin 250 top turret , as most of you know these were used in B24s ,B26s ,YB40s and A20s , hopefully it will be arriving within the next six weeks and again this is an ex burtonwood airfield artifact. ;)
As soon as it arrives i will post a few pictures.........

Well they finally arrived , only took another year but hey they have only took in total twenty five years to actually get a genuine set of early turret ammo cans.
I have laid them out as they would be in situ in the turret , this is how the ammunition would of been linked together from can to can.
They must of made one hell of a racket as each can emptied one after another pulling the ammo over rollers and cans ,plus the guns blasting away.
As for the martin 250 turret , i will start a new thread under the armourey section later.

whoops!.......forgot to add the picture

Colin,on the picture of the single ammo can and other little parts, the casting at the top right (3 holes) looks like one I am after, is there a chance I can get one cast from your one?

After thirty five years of looking I have finally found some one who had a sperry top turret azimuth gearbox and was prepared to sell it! To me this is the vital piece of the whole turret drive train as virtually every thing sits on top of it.
Luckily i had some thing I could do a trade with rather than cash , any thing to keep the cost down and thankfully it arrived safely , after a quick clean it was bolted into the turret.
As you can see from the photo the hydraulic motors bolt directly to the gearbox but it needs the electric motor to join both hydraulic motors together.

A fire interrupter came through the post the other day which looks in pretty good condition , after a few drops of oil the mechanism started to move........brilliant!
I always thought that this model of interrupter was for the later model turret as fitted to the B17G but on opening the top cover and giving the gearing a clean it clearly stated that it was for a B17F even better.
I took a trip down to daves the other day to look at his cockpit section which is a work of art and looked through some of his manuals and it appears that there was at least five possibly six different types of turret domes and according to the diagrams mine is model number three which is earlier than the one fitted to the Memphis Belle which is dome number four.
With this in mind I think my turret was fitted from mid 42 to early 43 with the high rise centre section being a modification as the belles turret was also fitted with one at one point in its life.
when you look at recent restoration pictures you can see this high raised section now on the floor obviously its not going to be used?
I am now on the look out for the electric motor , the elevation gearbox and transmission from the hydraulic motor and the two main elevation gear drives so if any one knows of these items please keep me in mind TA!
