I've searched the net for good pictures of groundcrews at work on the hardstands but haven't really come up with much. Any tips on where I should be looking and of course if anyone has a few lying around, I would be very gratefull and also very excited to see them.
Thanks
Abe

Come and see me at Elvington. I have a photo album of pictures taken at the 100th base, Thorpe Abbotts. I scanned them from their archives, but on condition that they were for personal use only, and not to be published.

See also the 100th BG website. There's loads of photos on there. http://www.100thbg.com/index.htm

Abe, there are a huge number of those sort of photos from the USAF WWII Archive available for free via NARA on Fold3.
Obviously these include posed shots, but the remainder are real-life snaps. :)

These pictures of groundcrew I found last year on ebay. They show groundcrew belonging to the 61stTCS 314thTCG working on their C47s and C109 flying Gas Tanker. Sorry about the quality, but this is the best I could do the original pictures were only about 2x1 inch big and weren't taken with a very good camera I guess.

Could anyone tell what the trolley thing is? Is it some sort of rig for testing hydraulics?

Thanks for the great response fellas, I really appreciate it. Steve I will definitely come and see you at Elvington to look through your album, the only problem is, your display is always so popular it's hard to get a look in!
Paul thanks for the NARA tip I have had a quick look but am not sure where I'm going, I think I need a NARA for dummies book!!!
Nightdriver, thanks for posting the pics, they are exactly what I am looking for, on the fifth photo down, is that a line shack in the background? If so what a superb structure.
Again thanks for the great response. Now, back to NARA........

Just another question, on the photo of the c-47 engine change, there is the often seen lifting gear rig, does anyone know of any examples of these still in existance? And also how come both C-47 and B-24 have the same code numbers, Q9?

Ok, at the risk of becoming a royal pain in the ****. I have been on the NARA site and found fold 3 and the usaf photo section, but cannot seem to pin down photo's of groundcrews. When I put a word search in ie, groundcrew, maintainance, hardstand etc etc it just takes me back to a previous page which lists different periods. So, Paul have you got any tips on how to narrow the search. I am in no doubt that it's me being dim, but if you have any ideas that would be great.
Thanks Abe.

The 'A' Frame engine hoist in the C-47 picture. There is/was one at Duxford, seen at the left edge of this picture after refitting of the engine on B-17 "Mary Alice".

If you browse to the WWII US Air Force Photos, you should get the list of sections.
WWII US Air Force Photos » Europe » England » Maintenance » Engines should get you started.
The first image in that folder is 52888AC. Open and pin the filmstrip at the bottom of the screen and away you go. :)
